The Friday Muse – Tinson’s Door (Part 1)

    September 6, 2019 /

Tinson felt a strange mix of loneliness and contemplative freedom being in the common study room this late after everyone else had already retired for the evening, even though on most nights, the scientists and scholars who came to this place usually stayed late into the night and early into the morning to drink in the knowledge and research available in the mid-sized study hall.

The Friday Muse – The Princess of Para

    June 23, 2017 /

The frosted glass allowed the morning’s luminescence to bleed into the castle, filling the hallway with bright white light that flowed gracefully across the white marble flooring, the brownish-gray walls, and the ivory doors of the servants’ quarters. The scent of bacon and potatoes filled the wide corridor, signaling breakfast, but the silence that permeated the thick tile and even thicker walls gave the illusion it was still night when everyone slumbered and hid from the darkness within the darkness. Irasta walked barefoot across the tiles, the undersides of her feet chilled by the lingering cold that seized the fortress each night. She momentarily missed the comfort of her own…

The Friday Muse – The Unending Staircase

    March 17, 2017 /

Made of concrete, the small thirty by thirty structure sat alone in a vacant parking lot. A single black door against all-white cement was the only indication that people were meant to enter and exit the structure. The lot itself belonged to a grocery store that had been torn down long ago. Nothing else resided for miles along Highway 17, even though the highway was a main artery connecting Fenneston to Fairbanks. Pam spotted the uncanny landmark while passing through on Highway 17 on her way to Fairbanks. In fact, she passed it many times on her multiple trips to Fairbanks. She always found herself curious as to why the…

    Eight Ball, Corner Pocket

    March 10, 2017 /

“Eight ball, corner pocket,” Shane called out. His trembling hands coated the pool stick in slippery sweat, making it difficult to position his shot. Sergio leaned against the pool table, a smirk slowly bleeding across his face. “You just called your fate, ese.” Gripping the pool stick, Shane lowered himself to the table and attempted to line up his shot. His rapidly pounding heart reminded him of how ridiculous it was that his fate and the fate of his wife and kid rested on a simple game of pool. His mind tried to trace the events that led him here… He caught his wife cheating with his best friend. That’s…

The Friday Muse – Jen Fled

    February 17, 2017 /

“Where are you going?” Jen stared out the window at the clouds below. “Anywhere but here.” “No really, where are you headed?” the older woman insisted. “I don’t know.” The old woman grumbled something under her breath and then resumed reading her beaten copy of Reader’s Digest. To Jen, the clouds looked like puffs of white cigarette smoke. In truth, she had no idea where she was headed. The plane ticket would take her to Paris, but beyond that, she had no itinerary. She just knew she had to get as far away from Victor as possible. “Drink?” Jen turned toward the stewardess. “Just water.” The old woman chuckled. “I’m…

The event occurred many years before Conrad’s time. He only heard of it from his father, who was a lover of history and enjoyed studying anomalies of the past, especially ones that the general public did not believe in. The tower – The Princeton, a scientific marvel housing black door technology, was destroyed by explosion. The specifics surrounding this event are scattered through the telling of urban legends and the writing of conspiracy theory novels. Conrad’s father told him that because of the event – the destruction of the Princeton – that the fabric of space and time were weakened so heavily that it caused tears in reality. These tears…

The Friday Muse – Home On The Horizon

    January 13, 2017 /

San Francisco was never her favorite place. She might have called it home, but it wasn’t in her heart to name the City a place close to her heart. The weather was too cold, the prices were too high, and there was something in the air – something amiss – that always gnawed at her consciousness. She wasn’t sure if it was an omen or some kind of psychic ability she unknowingly possessed, but she always felt San Francisco was burdened by evil. Sure, crimes were constantly committed in the city. But that was no different than any other city. Cram 8 million people into such a small area of…

The Friday Muse – My Fiction Year In Review

    January 6, 2017 /

This last year I floundered a bit at different times with my commitment to write new fiction every Friday, but I picked up the mantle once again towards the end and started writing out full short fiction pieces both to get into the practice of writing every week and to get in the habit of being less shy with what I write. In case you missed any of my fiction pieces, here’s a comprehensive list of the most recent batch with links to each. New stories will pick up again next Friday. Have a great weekend! The Stars Are Brightly Shining Snowfall In EuropeThe Mad Sea End Transmission The Man…

    New Year, New Goals

    January 4, 2017 /

Well, it’s here. We’re finally out of 2016 and are basking in the newness of 2017. 2016 wasn’t so much as bad for me as it was challenging. Between running the publishing company and trying to get my own writing done in the midst, I didn’t come close to completing any of my authorly projects. This new year will be all about balance (and more than a few late nights) for me. Some of the writing projects I’ll be working on (and completing) this year: Red Crane This is my first attempt at a supernatural detective novella. I have the base draft done, and I just need to do cover…

The Friday Muse – The Mad Sea

    December 9, 2016 /

The sea slapped the shore like an abusive lover. The pieces left behind, tiny granules of sand, sifted away like fearful mice, retreating into the embrace of that which shattered them. Never to be seen again. Never to be thought of or missed or praised. Their existence was cut short, but nobody protested it. Not the abusive ocean tide or the abused sand. Life went on. Life was cruel. Corey watched the madness of the water at a safe distance from the shore. She knew the ocean was freezing cold this time of year, and many times, especially on this end of Harborite, a rare jellyfish would hijack the ocean…

Some days seem harder than others to get through. Some days seem harder than others to get through. Yesterday, my brother and I (and my son) worked on both of my cars from 8am to 1030pm. I am grateful to have two vehicles, but both of them have been on their dying breathes for the last 6 months now, and it's everything I can do to keep one or the other running enough so I can just get to work every day. Yesterday consisted of a new radiator, thermostat, A/C recharge, power steering pump adjustment, hose replacement, battery replacement, and multiple trips to AutoZone. Both cars still have issues to be resolved - and some issues that cannot or are not worth resolving. I am exhausted and hoping to be able to save some money soon - instead of spending it on car repairs - so I can get a more reliable car and not have to do this every other weekend. 😔
